Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LiCoO2) also known as lithium cobaltite is a new source of cobalt to produce glazes, inks, etc.

It substitutes for cobalt oxide (CoO2) or cobalt carbonate (CoCO2) with similar results and it has environmental advantages. This cobalt compound (Strictly Recycled – TM) is extracted from exhausted lithium ion batteries such as used in cell phones, laptop, IPODs and other electronic gadgets. This breaktrough recycling technology was developed by On To Technology, and it has received approval by the most important environmental organizations.  This product offers a Green Rebate up to 10% of the purchase price. Buying this lithium cobalt oxide helps to protect our planet.

Lithium cobalt oxide is a deep dark blue powder. Under stoneware firing conditions the lithium in the compound may form a flux and vaporize.  The blue that results from this powder is the same as that from cobalt oxide.  The ceramic pieces shown are glazed with a dispersion of the powder and fired under oxidation process (electric kiln, cone 6 temperature).  A small pile of the powder is shown in the photo as a sample.

Look what a leading glaze company told about our powder after tested it. "The On To compound produced a very bright and clean blue in the ceramic and frit tests. We have another cobalt waste stream that is cheapper but which does not produce as a chromatic blue as the Onto product."

Specifications - 1 pound (453g)

Particle size: 355 mesh and below.

Purity: Alfred Analytical Laboratory tested leachate from a sample glazed with the following formula: volcanic ash 85%, zinc oxide 5%, whiting 10% and 10% lithium cobalt oxide (It is a lot!!!). The goal was to create a leachable glaze using a large concentration of cobalt to show if the cobalt compound is contaminated with heavy metals.

The results are below and show OnTo is providing a very pure source of cobalt:

Cadmium, Mercury, Nickel – tested for and not detected

Copper – 0.017 mg/L

Manganese – 0.0234 mg/L

Cobalt – 3.78 mg/L

Food safe glazes are non-leachable, that is, the metals stay inside.  Non-leachable glazes are produced from mixes with sufficient alumina and/or silica.
